Originally named Arlington in the early 1860's, the growing community was renamed Eau Gallie in the late 1860's. (Roughly translated this means Rocky water, after the coquina rocks that line the Indian River.) Eau Gallie remained independent until 1969 when the citizens voted to merge with, and take the name of, the neighboring City of Melbourne. However, Eau Gallie still has its own "High Street" (Highland Avenue) and its own character!
